This report is part of the Sentencing Spotlight series. These publications present statistics on sentencing outcomes for offences finalised in Queensland courts.

Our Sentencing Spotlight robbery, defined under section 409(1) of the Criminal Code, provides insight into cases sentenced between July 2005 and June 2018.

Our research found:

• 6,109 cases were sentenced for robbery
• 5,284 cases where this was the most serious offence (MSO)
• 94.6% of the cases where robbery was the MSO had aggravating circumstances (that is, where the person committing the offence is or pretends to be armed with any dangerous or offensive weapon or instrument; is in company with someone else; and/or wounds or uses any other personal violence to any person)
• 86.9% of offenders were male
• 24.8% were Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
• the average age of offenders was 22.6 years
• 98.5% of offenders pleaded guilty
• of the adult offenders sentenced, 71.7% received a term of imprisonment
• for child offenders, robbery was identified as the MSO in 1,215 cases
• 39.9 % of child offenders received probation.
