We advise the government on sentencing matters, when requested. This research involves reviewing matters about sentencing, consultation with key stakeholders and the general public to obtain their views on the issue, and publishing a final report.
Sexual and domestic violence offences
We have been asked to review some aspects of sexual and domestic violence sentencing in Queensland.
Serious violent offences scheme review
We released our final report on 9 June 2022 and made 26 recommendations to Queensland Government.
Penalties for assaults on public officers
We released our final report in October 2020 and made 13 recommendations to Queensland Government.
Intermediate sentencing options and parole
We released our final report in August 2019 and made 74 recommendations to Queensland Government.
Sentencing of child homicide offences
We released our final report in October 2018 and made eight recommendations to Queensland Government.
Classification of child exploitation materials for sentencing purposes
We released our final report in July 2017 and made 16 recommendations to Queensland Government.
The Sentencing Advisory Council was first established in Queensland in December 2010 as an independent statutory body under the Penalties and Sentences Act 1992. It was dismantled in 2012.
