Gender breakdowns added to sentencing data
Gender insights are now easier to explore with a significant update to the yearly trends section of the Queensland Sentencing Advisory Council’s Sentencing DataHub.
The Council’s yearly trends section of the Sentencing DataHub provides statistics on sentencing outcomes for the past 20 financial years.
The latest update means annual trends can now be viewed by gender and individual offence categories can be filtered by gender.
For example, in 2024–25 the most common offence category for men in the higher courts (Supreme and District courts) was assault, while for women, it was drug offences.
The update also allows users to view the yearly trends for men, women, boys, and girls.
Queensland Sentencing Advisory Council Chair Kerry O’Brien said the more in-depth statistics were an important tool for service providers to help target prevention and assistance programs.
“The trends section of our Sentencing DataHub provides valuable information to lawyers, researchers, not-for-profit groups and the general public about what is happening in our courts and how that changes over time,” Mr O’Brien said.
“The Council is committed to providing accurate and up-to-date information about sentencing in Queensland to ensure the public is informed on our justice system.
“The Sentencing DataHub ensures there is data available to help support evidence-based decision making and implement effective programs where they are most needed.”
The demographic breakdowns come after the data for the 2024–25 financial year was made available at the end of last year.
