Guide to the sentencing of children in Queensland

The Guide to the sentencing of children in Queensland (PDF, 1.4 MB) explains how Queensland courts sentence children found guilty of an offence under the Youth Justice Act 1992 (Qld).

This guide aims to help people understand the principles and considerations a court must take into account when sentencing child offenders and provides information on:

  • the role of the courts
  • who is involved in the sentencing process
  • how the courts decide the sentence, and
  • different penalty and sentencing options for children.

While some of what is described in this guide also applies in other Australian states and territories, there are significant differences between Queensland and the rest of Australia.

The Guide to the sentencing of children in Queensland is a companion resource to the Council’s Queensland Sentencing Guide which explains how courts sentence adults under the Penalties and Sentences Act 1992 (Qld).
